Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

BENJAMIN F. FURNISH, farmer and stock grower, was born in Gallatin County, Ky., June 25, 1837. His father, John Furnish, a native of Harrison County, was born November 30, 1800, and was a farmer and blacksmith. He was a captain in the Black Hawk war, and colonel of the militia of Harrison County. He was a member of the Baptist Church for many years, and married Eliza Lemon, of Harrison County, daughter of David and Elizabeth Lemon, natives of Maryland. Five children blessed this union. Mrs. Furnish died in 1835, and Mr. Furnish next married Susan Donely, of Shelby County, daughter of James and Cassandra (Murphy) Donely, natives of Scotland. One son and one daughter were born to this union, the subject of this sketch being the elder. James Furnish, grandfather of Benjamin F., was a captain in the war of 1812 under Gen. Harrison, and also took part in many of the Indian wars of Kentucky. Benjamin F. Furnish has followed farming all his life, and now owns 320 acres, in two tracts, all in good cultivation and well stocked. April 6, 1864, he married Elizabeth McKitrick, a native of Switzerland County, Ind., and a daughter of William H. and Zurilda (Allen) McKitrick, natives, respectively, of Harrison County, Ky., and Switzerland County, Ind. Four children were born to this union, viz.: William, Annie, Attilla and Arch. Mr. Furnish is a Democrat and a Master Mason. His wife is a member of the Christian Church.
