Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

H. M. SAUNDERS was born March 18, 1851, in Bowling Green, Ky., and is the sixth of eight children born to Jesse and Emerine V. (Feland) Saunders, natives of Barren and Warren Counties, Ky., respectively, of English, Irish and German origin. Subject’s grandfather, John Saunders, who married a Miss Smydth, was reared in Virginia, and was a farmer. Subject’s grandfather, James Feland, who married a Miss Mary Stall, was born and reared in North Carolina; he was a farmer. H. M. Saunders was reared principally on a farm; he was but two years old when his mother died, and but nine when his father died. He lived with his step-mother until he was sixteen years old, when he engaged in teaching in Fulton County. He continued to teach and attend school till he was twenty-five years old. After that he engaged as salesman in Fulton, Hickman and at Martin, Tenn. In 1880 he embarked in the newspaper business and established the Martin Exchange. This not being profitable he moved to Fulton and changed the name of the paper to Index. In January, 1883, he commenced publishing the Baptist Gleaner, edited by Revs. Moody and Hall. Mr. Saunders was married February 14, 1883, to Miss Kate Compton of Madisonville, Ky., a daughter of Judge James and Mary (Hicklin) Compton. To this union was born one child, Avil L. Mr. S. is a member of the Christian Church and a Democrat.
