Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOSEPH DETRAZ was born in Indiana, June 21, 1848, and is the fourth of a family of six children born to Lewis and Malinda (Strafford) Detraz. Lewis Detraz was born in France in 1808, immigrated to America in 1816, and settled in Indiana; his wife, Malinda Strafford, was born in Kentucky in 1816. Joseph Detraz was reared on a farm, and received a common-school education. He followed farming in Indiana until 1883, when he moved to Kentucky, and settled where he now resides. He owns 137 acres of well improved land, and of late has been devoting considerable attention to raising fine horses. He married Miss Sarah Olive Farris, daughter of Walter C. and Emarine (Hanks) Farris, natives of Kentucky, and to this union six children were born, of whom five are living: Ida, Oddie F., Ollie, Emma, Clarence W. and an infant. Mr. Detraz and his family are members of the Christian Church. Politically he is a Democrat.
