Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 8a by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1888. These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary. RICHARD CROUM, Bullitt County, was born in Green County in 1820. He is the fifth of ten children born to Henry and Nancy (Skaggs) Croum, the former a native of North Carolina, the latter a daughter of Moses Skaggs, of Green County. Henry C. was a gallant soldier in the war of 1812, and bore an honorable part in the memorable battle of New Orleans. The subject of this sketch was reared in Green County, and received but a limited education. He married Miss Frances Towns, and to them have been born two children, viz.: Elam, born March 10, 1860, and Bert, born May 12, 1862. When the civil war broke out in 1861, Mr. Croum enlisted in the Thirteenth Kentucky (Federal) Infantry, and served to the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge, in 1865, at Chattanooga.
