LOHMAR, HENRY, attorney and counselor at law, real estate and collection agent; office and residence corner of Madison and Hain; born in Germany, 1826; received a liberal education. At the age of 17, commenced the study of the law, which he continued until the troubles of 1848 in that country, when he participated in the Liberal movement for one year; in 1852 came to this country, to Keokuk, and, being unacquainted with the people and language of the country, he first engaged to work as a tinner; served an apprenticeship at that trade from 1849 until 1852. November, 1854, he married Miss Mary T. Burrus, who was born near Cologne, Germany, 1827, and emigrated to this country, to Oquawka, Henderson Co., Ill., 1852. They have four children. In 1861, he enlisted in the 30th I. V. I. as private, but by special order of Secretary Stanton, was made Ordnance Sergeant, and served three years; at his enlistment, was offered $65 local bounty which he refused, as his enlistment had been through other motives than for money, and ordered the money returned to the Treasurer. After his return from the army, he lived for several years in Bonaparte, Van Buren Co.; there he held the office of Assessor; in 1874, he removed to West Point; in 1876, was admitted to the bar and is now practicing in the courts at Madison and Keokuk. Mr. and Mrs. L. are members of the Assumption Church.
