Below is a family biography included in The History of Warrick County, Indiana published by Goodspeed, Bros. & Co. in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. JOEL SKELTON, a native of Warwick County, Ind., was born September 11, 1830. His grandparents, Zachariah and N. J. (Scales) Skelton, came to Warrick County when the father of our subject, Thomas Skelton, was but a small lad. Thomas was born in Georgia in 1803, and when twenty-three years old wedded Sarah Taylor, whose parents were also old settlers of this county. Joel Skelton was reared by his parents to manhood, receiving in youth, a good common school education. His marriage with Miss Nancy J. Spradley was solemnized, this lady’s birth occurring July 6, 1829. She died December 31, 1853, leaving three children: Lucretia E. (Mrs. John Simpson), Susan M. (Mrs. Samuel Broshears) and Thomas. Mr. Skelton has made farming his principal occupation through life, but from 1880 until 1884 merchandised at Tennison, where he is now Postmaster. He owns valuable property, is a Notary Public, and is also Pension Agent. December 25, 1863, he enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Twentieth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served until May 26, 1865, when he was discharged at Madison, this State, by general order of the War Department. His grandfather, Zachariah Skelton, was Probate Judge of Warrick County a great many years. He is a member of the G. A. R. fraternity, and of the United Baptist Church.
