Below is a family biography included in The History of McLean County, Illinois published by Wm. LeBaron, Jr. Co. in 1879.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. THOMAS HOLWAY, proprietor of Union House, Saybrook; was born in Toronto, Upper Canada, Sept. 24, 1825; at the age of 8, his parents moved to Jordan, Onondaga Co., N. Y., where his father died Sept. 6, 1847, from injuries received by being thrown from a wagon; his mother is still living in Onondaga Co., N. Y., at the good old age of 83. Mr. Holway married, Oct. 8, 1848, Miss Emily Hunter, daughter of John Hunter, of Onondaga Co., N. Y., and the next year moved to this county and settled on Sec. 11, of this township, remaining five years, when he moved to Saybrook and built the “Union House” — the first brick building in the village; the brick was made in the village, near where now is the depot of the L. B. & M. R. R. — Mr. Holway working in making them; he has ever since kept the hotel — except one year — and a good one it is in every respect; he has also been engaged in the brick business for the last twelve years; his wife was born in Albany, N. Y., Nov. 5, 1825, and died in Saybrook Jan. 28, 1867; they had six children — three living — Martha M., Mary and Kittie; three died — Katie, Johnnie and Alabama.
