A. J. Park was born in the Palmetto State in 1820, a son of Joseph and Margaret (McMullam) Park, the former of whom was a participant in the War of 1812 under Gen. Jackson, and died in 1838, his wife passing from life in 1860. Until he was fifteen years of age the subject of this sketch resided in his native State, but he then went to Alabama, and ten years later removed to Mississippi, his home being in that State for fourteen years. In 1861 he joined Capt. Jones’ company, Dawson’s regiment, but later became a member of McKain’s regiment, the first engagement in which he participated being at Backbone Ridge and the next at Prairie de Ann. He was then at Poison Springs, Mark’s Mill and Jenkins’ Ferry, after which he started with Price on his raid through Missouri, and was in the engagement at Independence, prior to this, however, participating in the engagements at Pilot Knob and on the Big Blue. Mr. Park finally found himself near Waco, Tex., and there he received his discharge, and returned home, but soon after came to Arkansas, and began tilling the soil, and is now the owner of 320 acres of rolling land. In 1843 he was married to Miss Stanbau, of Alabama, who died in 1852, and in 1864 Mr. Park wedded his present wife, a Mrs. Jackson, by whom he has three children: Ada (wife of S. F. Smith), Frank (who was married to a Miss Forwood) and Baldy. Mr. Park is a Democrat, and in 1886 was elected to the office of justice of the peace. He and his wife belong to the Christian Church.
