N. E. Duffey, deputy circuit court clerk, and one of the representative men of the county, was born in Bristol, Conn., on the 12th day of August, 1849, and is the son of Nicholas and Mary (Hogan) Duffey, natives of County Westmeath, Ireland. The parents emigrated to America at an early day, and located in Connecticut. From there they removed to Illinois, in 1859, and settled in Madison County, near Edwardsville, where the father followed agricultural pursuits, and where he remained for several years. The mother died in 1851. Of their family there are three children now living: James, Owen, and Nicholas E., who is the youngest of the family. He was principally reared in Illinois, and there received his education. At once, with the energy and industry of his forefathers, he devoted himself to tilling the soil, and this continued until in April, 1872, when he came to Arkansas, and located at Batesville. He first engaged in the livery business, which he continued for a number of years, and then embarked in merchandising. This he carried on in Oil Trough Bottom for about five years, and three years in Batesville. The last few years he has been practically retired, with the exception of settling up his business. Since January, 1889, he has been acting as deputy circuit clerk. He is the owner of about 600 acres of land, with 240 under cultivation. By his marriage, which occurred in 1878, to Miss Eglantine Gainer, a native of Arkansas, he became the father of three children: Mollie, Gainer and Nora. Mrs. Duffy is a member of the Episcopal Church. He is a very public-spirited citizen, and is always ready to assist any public enterprise. He is a member of the A. F. &A. M., and is also a member of the K. of P.
