Below is a family biography from the book,  The History of Franklin County, Arkansas published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. Benham Carter, cashier of the Ozark Bank, was born in Tishomingo County, Miss., October 18, 1845, and is a son of T. A. Carter, M. D. [see sketch]. He accompanied his father to Ozark where he grew to manhood and received a moderate education. When seventeen years of age he enlisted in the Home Guards, and in 1863 joined Company C, First Arkansas Cavalry, Confederate States Army, and served until the cessation of hostilities. Among other battles he participated in the fights at Prairie De Hand, Mark’s Mills and Fayetteville. At Mark’s Mills he received a flesh wound which disabled him from active service for four months. After the war he joined his father in Texas, and there farmed and clerked until 1868, after which he clerked in Webb City, Franklin Co., Ark., remaining there until 1879. He bought an interest in the firm in 1872. He then established a mercantile business in Ozark, which he conducted until 1887, and then sold. He and other prominent business men established the Arkansas Valley Bank, of which he was elected cashier, and which is the only bank in Ozark. Mr. Carter is one of the most reliable business men of the place, and is a director, the treasurer and one of the original stockholders of the Ozark Canning Association. June 29, 1873, Mr. Carter married Eugenie Beneux, a native of this county, where she was reared. Her parents were Justine and Sallie Beneux. Her father was a native of France. Mrs. Carter bore four children, viz.: Lillian P., Elsie R. (who died aged sixteen months), Ouita G. and Claude B. Mrs. Carter died December 10, 1886. Mr. Carter is a Royal Arch Mason, and has served as Master and High Priest of his Chapter.
