New York, Barge Office Immigration Facility, historic photograph

In this vintage photo:

The Barge Office immigration facility.

Barge Office immigration facility was the first immigration center operated by the Federal Government. Barge Office opened as a temporary immigration facility on April 19, 1890 and operated until December 31, 1891. The new Ellis Island immigration center took over the process when it opened on January 1, 1892. On June 14 and 15, 1897, the original Ellis Island facility burned to the ground and processing again returned to Barge Office on June 15, 1897. Barge Office continued as the point of immigration processing until December 16, 1900. The new, second Ellis Island immigration facility opened on December 17, 1900.

This photo is by Detroit Publishing Co., and dates from about 1900.
