Albert F. Carr, one of the leading merchants of Caledonia, was born in this county, November 28, 1853, the son of Dr. Albert and Desdemonia P. (Howard) Carr. The father was a native of Richland County, Ohio, and the mother of Erie County, Penn. They were married in Knox County, Ohio, and came to St. Francois County, Mo., in 1847. Four years later they moved to Washington County, where the mother still lives. The father died in 1885. He was a physician by profession, though his last work was in the sawmill business. Politically, he was a Democrat. The mother is a member of the Presbyterian Church. Albert F. was educated in the common schools, and later attended the Bellevue Collegiate Institute. After farming for some time he turned his attention to the sawmill business in Reynolds County, and in connection with this operated a store. In 1884 he returned to Caledonia, and in 1887 erected a commodious storehouse, 22x60 feet, and put in a good stock of general merchandise. In 1880 he married Miss Mattie Howard, a native of Washington County, and to this union were born four children: Mabel, Albert, Russell and an infant. Mr. Carr is a Republican in politics, and has lived in this county for twenty-nine years, being accounted one of its best citizens.
